Diabetes & Feet

As your feet are the furthest away from the main organs in your body, problems associated with diabetes tend to show in the feet first.

The two main ways diabetes affects the feet are:
• Reduced circulation, causing slower healing rate
• Damaged nerves, causing reduced sensation to the feet

People who do not manage their diabetes well tend to be at higher risk of problems. Consequently, they may feel a lack of sensation at their feet, and lose the ability to efficiently heal cuts, wounds and bruises. These then lead onto potential foot ulcers and infections that in the worst case scenarios, lead to amputations.

In Podiatry, we aim to reduce and prevent the progression of diabetes to the lower limbs through neurovascular assessments, education and subsequent referrals when necessary.

All results from any diabetes assessments will be relayed back to your appointed medical practitioner.
